Executive Etiquette Tip – Phone

by jill on July 15, 2009

Use speakerphones sparingly.  Never initiate a call on speakerphone.  Ask the person you’re calling for permission before putting them on speakerphone, and then name everyone in the room with you.  VERY IMPORTANT – Participants should identify themselves whenever speaking. “Bob, this is Jane, I think we should consider…” And avoid using speakerphones in cubicles.  Your cube colleagues will appreciate this.

My LinkedIn readers offered some additional tips for the Speakerphone posting above:

Ask at the beginning of the call if everyone can be heard on the other end. Participants should be equidistant from the microphone.

Speak into the microphone; don’t wander around the room while you talk.

Keep extraneous noise to a minimum, such as rattling papers or tapping pens. No side conversations! If you must make noise, or if you won’t be contributing to the conversation for a time, mute your end of the call.
